Brief - Manufacture a tiled wall panel to be used as backsplash for an Aga cooker. Comprised of plain terracotta tiles combined with authentically manufactured encaustic tiles, being reproductions of 12th Century tiles found in Chertsey Abbey in London. Encaustic tiles are made by impressing a design into soft plastic clay. The impression is then filled with a different coloured clay, the tile finished, dried and fired. The result is genrally used for floors as it is hard wearing and the design wears with the tile, unlike glazed decoration, which is on the surface. We have also reproduced tiles for Westminster abbey, exactly to the design as found in various areas within the abbey. |
